LIME, ROMAN CEMENT & HOT LIME

Lime in its many forms is the basis of many conservation repairs and there is skill in specifying the right mortar mix or render, limewashe or shelter coat. Members of the practice belong to the Building Limes Forum and the practice organised two Hot Lime training days for professionals an contractors as part of the Heritage Lottery funded repairs at St Mary’s Church in Oxted.

HOT LIME

ST MARY'S CHURCH, OXTED

Working with Hot Lime specialist Nigel Copsley we arranged a training day for the masons carrying out the work at St Mary's to expand their experience and knowledge of the material, and a second for conservation professionals.

ROMAN CEMENT

HADLOW TOWER

Much of the Gothic decoration at Hadlow Tower took the form of motifs cast in Roman Cement and applied to the structure. Over time many of these had eroded and fallen. Extensive research and trials in collaboration with Prompt and Paye Stonework and Restoration resulted in the recreation of this splendid folly.
